Physical therapists apply skilled graded forces to move a joint in desired directions. Unlike stretching of muscle, joint mobilization specifically helps improve mobility of the joint capsule. The therapist will isolate a joint in the extremity or spine and perform a series of graded oscillations to affect the roll and slide of the underlying bone to affect the capsule.  The series of oscillations it is called mobilization; when the force is an end range high velocity thrust it is called manipulation. The passive movement of the joint also affects the neural structures and can aide in pain management and muscle relaxation.  Some popular names associated with physical therapy joint mobilization are Kaltenborn, Maitland, Paris and Mulligan.
